23- Hyoyeon

Hyoyeon didn’t make any sudden moves once the door slowly creaked open. On cue, the low growl of thunder filled the air and a scowling Sunny stood on the soggy welcome mat, momentarily backlit by a flash of lightning.

Someone's pissed.

Seohyun managed a convincingly excited tone. “Sunny--your hair! It’s cute!”

Sunny brushed the purple bangs from her forehead with a stiff, quick flip of the hand. “Yeah. Did it last night.”

“Purple suits you! I wish I’d known you wanted a change. I usually help with your new color.” Seohyun deserves an award for this performance. Or a straitjacket.

She’s right, though. Sunny looks extra cute with the lavender look. Like a sexy little alien. Hyoyeon didn’t know whether or not to reveal her presence in the living room. Yet, when the alien blinked in her direction, there was no need.

“It was spur of the moment,” Sunny said with a shrug. Seohyun moved away for Sunny to sweep into the house with the entitlement only a close friend could attain.

Hyoyeon lifted a hand to wave, but Sunny turned around once her arm left her side. Dammit, she’s really mad. Wait...shouldn’t I be upset with her? I did what Sooyoung told me and expressed my feelings. Via text. Which Sooyoung told me not to do...

My fingers shook every time I pressed send; I couldn’t help myself.

Sunny rested her butt against the back of a sofa, folding her arms. “So, what have you been up to, girl? It’s been awhile since we’ve had alone time.”

I know that’s a slight at me. This alone time is even lesser alone than you think...

Seohyun waved a hand nonchalantly. “Oh, you know...school. Had a project due.”

“That’s it? Just school? Nothing out of the ordinary?”

Seohyun retained direct eye contact. “Nope.”

“Fascinating.” Sunny nodded at an object on the floor. “Drop something?”

“Oh my, where’d that come from?” Seohyun swiped the rose from the floor and headed to the kitchen. “I’m going to put this in some water. Be right back!”

The blonde wished to beg,“Wait, don’t leave me!”, but it was every woman for herself.

Half a minute passed. Hyoyeon nervously played with her phone, flipping it over several times in her sweaty palms, listening to the running water and clinking of glass from the kitchen. Maybe if I just stand here, I'll blend in with my surroundings.

“What brings you here?” Sunny asked, voice already accusing. She didn’t even bother to turn her head, staring at whatever family pictures were on the display in front of her.

“Oh, you can see me now?” Hyoyeon flopped onto a chair, bluffing indifference. She nearly crushed her hip upon landing. This is the most deceivingly uncomfortable chair ever. Is the cushion made of cement?

“No-one ever sits in that chair.”

Hyoyeon winced and threw a leg over the side to play off the pain. “I’ll break it in.”

“How often do you frequent Seohyun?”

“How often do you frequent your phone? I sent a lot of unanswered texts last night.”

“I’ve been busy.”

“Too busy to fuckin’ text me back?” Hyoyeon’s voice sounded angrier than she anticipated.

Sunny tilted her head, face expressionless. “Well, obviously you’ve found other ways of preoccupying your time.”

Dear lord, she thinks I’m sleeping with Seohyun. That’s a laugh. “I can’t sit around waiting on you forever, Sunny.”

Seohyun halted at the living room walkway when she detected the tension. Her grip tightened around the slim glass vase. “Am I interrupting?”

Sunny’s eyes shot to the rose. “I could ask you the same thing, Seohyun.”

“...about?”

“What the fuck is this?” Sunny flung something small and shiny at her. It bounced off her chest and skidded onto the floor.

Hyoyeon craned her neck to see. The hair accessory didn’t mean anything to her. Although, Seohyun’s shocked, gaping expression spoke volumes.

“Speechless, Seohyun? First Yuri, then Jessica, and now Hyo? Are you attempting to live precariously through me and Taeyeon via dating partners?”

There’s that damn Jessica name again! Who the hell is she?

Seohyun set the vase onto a table before coolly replying, “As I recall, you’ve never dated Jessica.”

Hyoyeon’s insides leapt for joy. Could this be true? Maybe they’re not as close as I feared. Now, if I steer the conversation my way... “Did you read any of my texts?”

“God, Hyo. Could you chill out about the texts for five seconds?!” Sunny snapped, peeling her eyes from the taller girl.

“It’s a simple one-word answer.”

No, damnit. I did not.”

The fact that she hadn’t made any attempt to check out her messages felt more like a slap in the heart than her previous assumptions. “You’re telling me that you didn’t even try to see what I had to say?”

Sunny cursed under her breath and returned her attention to Seohyun. “So, you don’t deny sleeping with Jessica?”

What about me? She mentioned sleeping with me, too.

“I don’t.”

“Are you feeling pleased with yourself?”

A small, sinister smile. “Very much so.”

“Could you at least have the decency to warn us before banging everyone in our circle of friends?”

“I haven’t slept with Hyoyeon.”

Oh really? That’s what she had to clarify? These people. “Not yet, that is.”

A second face threw her an icy stare. Hyoyeon stood up, chuckling at her own joke. “Calm down, ladies. I’m kidding. Sunny, If you read some of my texts, you’d see that this is all a huge misunderstanding.”

“So, what are you doing here?”

Hyoyeon shrugged. “I’m Yuri’s best friend. I showed up to check on things.”

“A phone call would work.”

“Why do you care? Clearly, Jessica--whoever she is--takes priority. I’ll always be second place to her, no matter what.”

Sunny narrowed her eyes. “Where is this coming from?”

“Geez, Sunny. Just read her texts,” the youngest sighed, rolling her eyes.

“Don’t you tell me what to do. In fact, I’d argue that you have the worst judgement in this room.”

I’d argue that the lady trapped in the closet’s a good contender.

“That’s not fair!” Seohyun countered, crossing her long arms in frustration, “How come I’m the one being blamed for everything?!”

“Because you’re acting like a whore.”

Hoh, shit!

Seohyun’s face paled instantly. “Are--are you--”

“Hold on, children.” Hyoyeon positioned herself between them, unscathed by the eye bullets. “Let’s not resort to name-calling.”

Sunny pushed herself off the edge of the couch. “Why are you defending her?”

Hyoyeon shrank back at the sudden movement. “I’m not. How ‘bout--”

“Yes you are. Are you letting that innocent schoolgirl act work on you, too?”

Excuse me?!” Seohyun inched closer.

“Ladies, ladies. There are more civil--”

“You’re just jealous because you’ve been pathetically pining over Jessica for the longest and I was able to get intimate with her--” She snapped. “-just like that.”

“Spoken like a true whore.”

Hyoyeon’s palm made contact with Seohyun edging forward. “How about we sit and ta--”

“What’s wrong, Seohyun? You have nothing to say to that? Because it’s true. When you said you wanted to have sex, I didn’t think this would be unleashed.”

Seohyun’s lip buttoned up into a pout. Hyoyeon glanced at her balled fists, knuckles turning white. I can’t handle a fight today. Not someone of my size. I may have to call the closeted reinforcements.

“Tell me why, Seohyun. Why would you sleep with her if you gave a single fuck about my feelings?”

Hyoyeon looked up, watching Seohyun’s withering features. Oh no. That’s worse than a girl fight. Please, no tears.

“And you!” Hyoyeon jumped at the slap on the shoulder. “Sooyoung told me you made a pass at Seohyun. Is that how someone in love would act?”

A cold washed over her body. “Y-you--”

“I lied. I read your texts. After I got to Sooyoung’s place last night.”

“What were you doing there?”

“I was depressed. I needed to talk to someone who didn’t know all my friends.”

Ugh, Sooyoung. “She snitched on me?”

“Chill. I did most of the talking. It was a rough night and I had to stay sober to do this today.”

“What happened? I’ll make it better.”

Sunny snorted mockingly. “You’re full of shit.”

What?!

“You manned the "No Commitment" platform. Never spoke about wanting anything serious. Now all of a sudden, you do? I’m supposed to welcome you with open arms? After hearing you defend Seohyun? After seeing you all over Tiffany...”

Hyoyeon’s voice boomed out in a squeaky husk, “We made up for that!”

“You think fucking all night makes it go away!?”

“It helps!

“You’re not good at this ‘acquiring a girlfriend’ thing.”

“Look who’s talking,” Seohyun commented, looking down at her nails casually.

“Goddamnit, Seohyun. I love you. Don’t make me punch you square in the face.”

At that, Hyoyeon heard a thump from the closet door. “But you won’t, will you Sunny?! Or else BAD, BAD events will transpire!”

The high volume pissed Sunny off even more. “And there you go sticking up for her again!”

The blonde was too busy trying to convince Yuri to stay hidden. I’m starting for forget why. My health is in danger. “YOU’RE SUCH A KIDDER, SUNNY. Nothing violent going on. Nope!”

“Why are you acting so crazy!?”

“Because we all know that you’d flatten Seohyun, so let’s just skip that step.”

Seohyun sputtered out, “T-that’s not necessarily--”

“YES, IT IS TRUE. TURN THE OTHER CHEEK AND WE’LL HEAL THE WORLD.”

“HYOYEON. FUCK. Stop yelling!”

She pulled light locks from her reddening ears. “Fuck you, Sunny. And fuck that Jessica bitch.”

“No, fuck you because she was an amazing date until this one ruined it.”

At that, both Hyoyeon and Seohyun's voices erupted in a tangle of anger.

“Oh, so THAT’S where you--”

“Did you seriously consider--”

“WHERE DOES SHE LIVE? I’LL FIND--”

“You are truly pathetic, then.”

“God, I can’t understand you at the same time!” Sunny spat.

Seohyun didn’t wait to give Hyoyeon a chance to speak. “Are we going to loosely call the Thai dinner a date? No, honey. That’s just sad.”

“First of all,” Sunny pointed a stiff finger in her face. “don’t you ‘honey’ me or Hyoyeon will be ‘honeying’ you to the emergency room.”

“AND SHE’S TOTALLY KIDDING. OH, SUNNY. YOU CARD.”

SHUT UP!” Seohyun and Sunny screamed in unison.

Fine, but when that bull of a girl comes charging in here half-naked and disoriented, I’m gonna feign ignorance.

The sharp crack of thunder put them all to silence. There’s a storm going on both inside and out.

Sunny turned back to the taller girl. “SECONDLY, I’m not talking about that awful dinner, I’m referring to last night. You called when I had my face between her legs.”

Hyoyeon covered her ears. “LA LA LA LA--I can’t hear this. I can’t.”

“That wasn’t even me!” Seohyun replied, voice still shrill.

“Then, who was it?”

“How am I supposed to know?! I spent the the whole night here with my parents.”

“Likely story.”

“It’s the truth.”

“Plot twist! Looks like Jessica is the true whore of the story.” Hyoyeon ignored their glares while she snickered to herself.

“Don’t talk about her like that.” Sunny’s eyed her like she committed a sin.

She waved off the jest. “Oh please. I already lost. Next.”

“Huh?”

NEXT.” Hyoyeon picked up her phone from the cement chair. “Obviously, you care more about Jessica than me, so...”

“Did I say that?”

“You didn’t have to. I expressed my feelings and you didn’t give them a bit of consideration. I fucking confessed my love for you.”

“Well, the environment wasn’t exactly the most accommodating.”

Hyoyeon shook her head. “I give up on this relationship biz. Next.”

“Coward.”

The blonde whipped around as if the words formed a lasso. “Coward, who!?”

“This worked out exactly how you wanted. You wanted this to fail. If you really cared, you’d tell me straight up. Not with these lame texts.”

LAME?! I spilled my heart out!”

Hardly. Sure, I wanted more with you, but you shat on that notion from the beginning. Once I express interest in someone else, you have the perfect excuse to dodge responsibility. You carry yourself like such a badass...”

"I am badass." No matter how much I suddenly want to watch sappy movies and shovel ice cream into my stupid mouth until this hole in my chest is full.

"You're a punk. I'm not impressed."

“I-ah-you...” Hyoyeon attempted a smile to fight off the flushed heat coloring her cheeks. “You’ve gotta be kidding me. I SAID I LOVE YOU. DOES THAT COUNT FOR NOTHING?!”

“THEN, DON’T HIT ON MY FRIENDS.”

“FUCK YOU.”

“FUCK YOU, TOO.”

“FUCK ME? ME?! I GAVE YOU THE BEST DAMN ORGASMS YOU’LL EVER EXPERIENCE.”

“Juhyun?”

Ju-who? For a second, Hyoyeon believed the even voice to be Yuri’s until an older woman appeared in the doorway. She fastened her dripping umbrella.

“M-Mother!” Seohyun’s posture straightened and voice lowered as she stepped up to her. “You’re home early.”

“I got a call from a neighbor about unfamiliar cars in the driveway. I rush home to hear a very vulgar shouting match in my home. Why aren’t you in class?”

“I...I took a day off, Mother.”

“We’ll address this later.” Worried, wrinkled eyes scanned the two other girls. Her face transformed from concern to disgust. “Lee Sunkyu. You’re here. And your hair is purple.”

Sunkyu? Juhyun? Are these chicks running from the law?

Sunny politely smiled, eyes remaining dead. “That’s right.”

“I’m sorry. I don’t think I know you. Your name is...?”

Hyoyeon shuddered at the arctic eye contact. It’s like Seohyun’s ice glare times nine thousand. “My name’s Jessica, ma’am.”

“Jessica?”

“Yes. You got it.” She fought back a revealing grin.

“You’re...American?”

“As American as apple pie and Michael Jackson.”

“Should have known. Jessica, I’d like for you and your dirty mouth to leave.”

“With pleasure.” Hyosica grasped Sunny by the shoulder and pulled her along. She saluted to Seohyun standing there helplessly.

“I won't tolerate those kinds of women spending time with you,” Seohyun’s mother pointedly declared as they walked by.

Hyosica whistled over her shoulder, slipping out the door. “Yuri, let’s go!”

Seohyun’s mother shrieked at Yuri bursting from the closet door. The disheveled woman had on an oversized men’s coat and an unwavering tense smile.

“Hate to leave so quickly. Thanks for letting me borrow this jacket, Seo--uh, Juhyun.” She bowed three times while rattling off more words. “Seeyouatschoolokaygottagobye!”

Out they went. Sunny made sure to slam the door.
