13- Taeyeon
Taeyeon noted Sunny’s startled glance as a short blonde woman with pink cheeks and wandering eyes appeared. She also noted that this woman spent most of their conversation blatantly checking Tiffany out.
“Sorry, I didn’t catch your name,” Taeyeon said to her, plastering on her fakest smile.
“Hyoyeon,” the chick hastily answered before returning her attention to Tiffany. “So, is it true that American girls love to party?”
I would assume girls from any country enjoy partying.
“It’s true!” Tiffany giggled a little too loudly.
Hyoyeon’s face went smarmy. “Ya know, I’m a club promoter.”
“Really?!” Tiffany’s good at this. She actually sounds interested.
As they chattered, she took the time to watch Sunny. Obviously, her friend knew this person because she had on her “I don’t care even though I do” face. Maybe they have a history? Sunny, please tell me you’re not involved with this jerk.
Sunny’s gaze was cast down to her phone, scrolling with her thumb. I bet she’s reading that conversation with Jessica for the billionth time. She nudged her. “Hey. You alright?”
Fluffy pink hair bounced as her head jerked up. “Yeah. Why?”
Taeyeon moved in closer to speak over the music. “Do you know that girl?”
A shrug. What’s that supposed to mean? You don’t know? Or, you don’t want me to know that you know? Sunny’s always been so annoyingly private about the names of her sexual conquests.
“I’ll take that as a yes.”
“It doesn’t matter. You should be more worried than me.”
“What?”
“Taey,” a voice husked into her ear. She shivered and turned to Tiffany.
“Yeah?”
“Can I go dance with Hyoyeon? Just for a song or two.”
Not a big deal. It’s just dancing, right? I don’t even like to dance. I’m just here because Tiffany wanted to go. Also, this indie band is kind of crappy. I hope this is their closing song.
She glanced over at Sunny whose expression revealed nothing. Damnit, we’re supposed to be having in-tune buddy ESP right now! Don’t give me that blank face!
Before she could respond, something--or someone--caught her eye. Taeyeon held in a gasp. Suddenly, she felt seventeen again because Kwon Yuri emerged from the crowd and into their circle.
“Hey, Hyo. I may head out,” the tan girl yelled to Hyoyeon over the guitar solo.
Then, it was Sunny’s turn to gasp. “Yuri!?”
Yuri looked like she hadn’t even noticed the other people until she heard the high pitched squeal. “Sunny, is that you?”
“Hell yeah!” Sunny flung her arms around the shocked woman who squeezed her back at once. “It’s been forever!”
Taeyeon smirked when the Hyoyeon girl suspiciously eyeballed the two hugging. Does someone hate not being the center of attention?
Sunny gave her a second hug before pointing. “And there’s Taeyeon!”
It felt like all their eyes were on her as she gave a weak little wave.
“Isn’t she so pretty now? Last time you saw her, she was such a tomboy.”
“She was pretty back then, too.” Yuri broke out her signature crooked smile. That same smile.
“You two know each other,” Tiffany said through a smile. The insecurity wasn’t unnoticed.
“Yuri was Taeyeon’s first girlfriend,” Sunny explained.
Very unnecessary, Sunny.
Hyoyeon shook her head. “Wait, she’s your first girlfriend? But I thought--”
Yuri cut her off. “It wasn’t official. We went out a few times.”
“Wow. Small world.”
“Minuscule,” Tiffany commented, crossing her arms.
Kwon Yuri. The tall, gangly artist who caught her eye when they were grouped together to paint a wall mural for their high school. Always smiling and completely klutzy. She probably spilled half their paint budget on herself or other people. If not for her awesome ability to map out giant text, their mural leader would have given her the boot.
Taeyeon found it hilarious. She soon looked forward to the afterschool sessions just to see what antics she’d perform next. It wasn’t until Sunny pointed it out that she realized her crush. She began partnering up with Yuri just to get to know her. Sure, it resulted in being splashed, but she had plenty of paint clothes and patience.
When she had finally got the nerve to ask her out, Yuri obliged, but warned her that she wasn’t out to her family. Sunny acted as their “cover-up” friend whenever they had a date. One of those nights, Taeyeon kissed a girl for the first time. She also managed to snake her hand into a girl’s shirt for the first time. Taeyeon was a horny teenager.
“And now, Taeyeon stays at our friend Jessica’s place.”
Hearing her name brought Taeyon back into the present. Sunny blathered away, attempting to update the taller woman on their lives. Yuri wasn’t really listening. She nodded, but kept glancing over at Taeyeon. Looks like something’s on her mind. Just like old times.
“Yuri, are you leaving soon?” Taeyeon realized she hadn’t spoke in Yuri’s presence until then.
“I could stay later. What’s up?”
“Let’s catch up.” She turned to Tiffany, who quickly tore away from Hyoyeon who already began dancing in place. “Tiffany, you should go dance with Hyoyeon.”
“Taeeeyyy...” Tiffany whined, a new side of her revealing itself.
“It won’t be long. Just a few songs. I haven’t talked to Yuri since graduation.”
“You heard the lady. Come dance with me!” Hyoyeon announced, taking a hold of her hand and pulling her onto the dance floor.
“Fine.” Tiffany pouted as she followed the blonde.
Taeyeon sighed. I’ll have to deal with that later. “Wanna grab a drink?”
“Sure.” Yuri nodded and turned to the bar.
“Sunny?”
“You two go ahead. I’m gonna go talk to the DJ.” Sunny patted her on the shoulder and disappeared into the horde of people pressed against each other. By then, the indie group left the stage and a DJ entered the booth to play some American pop songs. They took two seats recently vacated by a couple at the end of the bar.
Taeyeon waited until the pretty bartender handed Yuri a beer before speaking. “So, how’ve you been?”
“Good in general. I’m back in school.”
“Really? Getting your Master’s?”
She took a sip. “Yep. In graphic design. How about you?”
“Hell no. I’m sick of school.”
“Noooo,” Yuri laughed into her drink. It’s been years since I’ve heard that goofy laugh. “I mean, how’ve you been?”
“Eh. I’m cool.”
“Is she your girlfriend?” She lifted her beer-holding hand to the far end of the packed crowd. The bar was elevated, so she could easily spot Tiffany swinging her hips and hair around to the heavy beat.
Taeyeon snorted. “Something like that. I’m so into her and it’s terrifying.”
“I can relate to that sentiment. Anyways, she has a beautiful smile. None of those smiles were directed at me, though.”
They lightly laughed at Tiffany’s undeniable jealousy. “She’s somethin'.”
“I miss hanging out with you and Sunny.”
“You should start again.”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea. Your girlfriend wouldn’t like it.”
“How about you? Do you have a girlfriend?”
She took a long swig of beer before answering. “Yep.”
Oh. Her tone changed. “What’s wrong?”
Yuri stared at the crowd for a minute, processing her next sentence. Even ‘til this day, she still has to overthink her words. Taeyeon puffed her cheeks and drummed a hand on the counter as she waited.
“You need a drink?” The bartender asked, showing up as if summoned.
“Oh. I’m sorry. I was just...yeah. I’ll have a beer.”
“Sure. Would you like a lime in it?”
Her eyebrows rose. “Uh, yeah. How’d you know?”
She shook her head as she poured the bottle into a tall glass and cut up a lime to place into a dish on the side, grinning to herself with some secret knowledge. Taeyeon paid her and turned back to Yuri, who finally began to reply.
“I’m glad I ran into you tonight, Taeyeon.”
She sounds possessed. Taeyeon squeezed a couple slices into her drink and sucked on the peel. “Why’s that?”
“Because I didn’t realize...that most of my friends are my girlfriend’s friends. Not Hyo, of course.”
What’s she about to tell me? I can’t take the drama. “Uh huh.”
Her voice lowered, so Taeyeon had to lean in.
“Have you ever wanted two people at the same time?”
“Uh...like a threesome?”
Yuri smiled at the joke, but continued. “I’m with the perfect woman, but lately I’ve gotten into someone else. I can’t decide what to do.”
Ahhh shit. Not my area of expertise. “I don’t believe in the ‘perfect partner’ thing. So, stop pressuring yourself so much.”
“You don’t think your girlfriend’s perfect?”
“No. I’m a realist. Tiffany’s stunning and worldly. Her silly stories never fail to entertain me. Whenever I show her my portfolio, she goes into a full-blown critique about every piece as if it means the world to her. Makes me feel special. However, she’s also naive and a little psycho. I think she spoils me with things because that’s how guys have treated her in the past.”
“Wow.”
“Labeling someone as perfect puts an onus on both parties.”
“I kissed her.”
“What?”
“The other girl. I kissed her.”
Taeyeon slurped at her glass. Well, this is an intriguing development. “Has it gone any further than kissing?”
“Second base. Or...second-and-a-half base. Whatever qualifies.”
“I take it that your girlfriend would consider this cheating.”
Yuri downed the rest of her beer and sharply clacked it on the countertop. “You’d be correct, ma’am.”
“Have you considered breaking up with her?”
Yuri exhaled heavily, dragging her fingers through her hair. “I can’t. We’re probably gonna get married.”
“Naturally, that’s the next step.”
“What should I do?”
“Um...” Taeyeon took a long sip to buy time. “...break it off before it gets too serious? Or...honesty can work.”
“I’ve been dreading those answers.”
“No matter what, someone’s gonna get hurt. Just remember whose feelings mean the most to you.”
Yuri ruminated on that comment, nodding and reaching for Taeyeon’s drink. Taeyeon let her take it. This girl is just as spacey as her high school days. Once the beer touched her lips, she snapped out her daze. “Lime? Oh gawwd, this isn’t mine.”
“It’s also in a glass. You were drinking out a bottle.”
“I should go hooome,” she slurred, taking a gulp anyways.
“You’re drunk. Are you taking a cab?”
“Assuming that Hyo will be taking a girl home in her car...yesh.”
Taeyeon looked over her shoulder at the busy floor. Still dancing. Hyoyeon had an arm around Tiffany’s waist and the biggest devilish grin.
“Oh shiiiitt. Not your girl, though!” Yuri exclaimed, almost dropping the glass.
“I understand.” Taeyeon re-claimed the beer. “Remember what I said about someone being hurt.”
“I will.” Yuri bit her lip as she dug into her messenger bag, fetching her wallet. “Breaking Seohyun’s heart is not gonna be an easy task.”
“What?!” Taeyeon choked, almost spitting out her drink. “Who!?”
“Seohyun.” Yuri was too gone to regard the reaction. “She’s this....beaaaauuutiful girl. Taeyeon, you wouldn’t even know.”
“Oh, I think I would.” Relax. Maybe it’s a different Seohyun. “Tell me more about this Seohyun.”
“Tall. Slender. She has these cute teeth.”
“Cute teeth, huh?”
“Yeah. Straight, cute teeth. Long legs. And she shivers when I kish her neck.”
Good god, I didn’t want this kind of description. “How do you know her?”
“University. She’s getting her Master’s in--”
“Packaging Design?”
“Yesh! How’d you know?”
“Lucky guess. Go on.”
“And she lives with her parents. But they go out a lot, so that’s when I visit and we have our ‘study dates.’” She willed her fingers to do two drunken bunny air quotes.
The girl that Seohyun mentioned. She never told us her name, even when we asked. She kept it a secret for a reason... “And she knows that you’re in a relationship?”
“Knows? She met her! At that awkward dinner with Hyo.”
Taeyeon blinked with disbelief and pointed at the dancers. “That Hyo!?”
“Yerp.” She slapped her money onto the counter. The bartender quietly plucked the bills from the smooth surface and counted the tab.
“Yoona had the craaazy idea to set them up. I tolllllddd her it wouldn’t work. She doesn’t listen to me. Ever.”
“Yoona is...?”
“My girlfriend. And future wife.” She snorted aloud as if she made a joke.
Taeyeon got out of her seat after placing her tip next to the half empty glass.
“Are you gonna finish that? I have a lot of thinking to do.”
“Go for it.” Taeyeon straightened her dress and whipped her phone from the little purse she borrowed/stole from Jessica’s closet. When the hell did Tiffany change my wallpaper to her face? This woman. “Hey Yuri, I think I’ma go find my friends.”
“Did I scare you off? I’m sooo sorry. You caught me on the worst night ever.”
“Give me your number. We can stay in contact.” Taeyeon handed her phone to the drunken girl.
Yuri concentrated hard as she typed in her contact info. “Thanks. You’re a real pal.”
Taeyeon smiled politely, took her phone, and texted Yuri to complete the exchange. Afterwards, she slipped into the horde. The dance floor wasn’t as well-lit as the bar, so her eyes had to adjust to the darkness as sweaty figures writhed around. Her eyes winced at the flashing lights, blinking back their multi-colored ghosts. Finally, she spotted Hyoyeon’s ridiculous yellow hair swaying side-to-side. On that end of the club, the bass boomed so heavily that Taeyeon felt her teeth rattle.
Why am I here? I hate the club as much as Jessica does. This isn’t a place for me. Yuri...oh, Yuri. She’s changed yet stayed the same in too many ways...dodged a bullet there. It’s overwhelming. I thought we’d have a happy walk down memory lane. Turned into a confessional featuring Seohyun--the other woman. So that’s why she’s been so cryptic and out of touch since that night she texted me. I assumed she was busy with school, not getting busy with my ex.
After a while, the bodies pushed her closer to her destination. The sea of sticky people moved her left and right until she accidentally bumped into Hyoyeon from the back.
Hyoyeon jerked her head around. Her face was shiny and she still wore that same stupid grin. “Whoa there, mama. Didn’t know you were interested.”
Taeyeon rolled her eyes, swerving around to see Tiffany. Her face glistened as she held her hair up with both arms and swung her hips back and forth. She’s so insanely hot. Her eyes cracked open when she noticed Taeyeon standing as motionless as possible in such a crammed area.
“Did you finally remember I was here?” Tiffany remarked, still dancing.
“We had a lot of catching up to do.”
“What made you think that I want to talk to you right now? I’m having fun without you.”
“Oooooh burnnnn,” Hyoyeon cackled, earning a lip raise from Taeyeon.
“We don’t have to talk,” Taeyeon shouted, competing with the music. “I came by to ask if I can have the next dance.”
As if rehearsed, the flashing lights changed from blue to red and the song’s techno beat dissolved into an American hip hop song. Taeyeon raised her arms in the air and threw up the “West Side” hand sign she’d seen on TV. “Awwww yee-yaaaah. Dis mah jam!!” she hollered in English.
Tiffany’s face split in half as she laughed harder than she’d seen all day. Hyoyeon looked completely puzzled.
Taeyeon thought of more catch phrases. “Wooo! Hollah back! Lez git it!!” She wiggled her body in some semblance of dancing as Tiffany, breathless with laughter, pulled away from the blonde to join her. She laced her arms around the brown-haired girl’s neck and pressed their bodies together, moving to the music. Taeyeon threw Hyoyeon a final smirk before refocusing on Tiffany. In a huff, Hyoyeon danced for a bit longer, then made her way to another part of the crowd. And stay there.
Tiffany tilted her head for their foreheads to touch, smoothing perspiration-soaked hair behind her ear. “You’re so silly, but your confidence is sexy.”
Exerting her body with all the movement in such a crowded mass had the shorter girl sweating already. Tiffany’s breath against lips wasn’t making her any cooler. “Oh yeah? You find me sexy?”
“I find you unbearably sexy... So, will you?”
Either she missed a part of her statement or Tiffany lost something in translation. “Huh? Will I what?”
“Will you have sex with me? Tonight?”
I think I love dancing.
