Epilogue- Yoona

“Have the last bite.”

Yoona leaned forward for Jessica to stuff the large piece of crêpe into her mouth. “Mmm,” she hummed, chewing exaggeratedly while her girlfriend neatly placed a napkin on the empty plate.

“Happy Six-month-aversary,” Jessica cooed, raising her wine glass.

The taller girl covered her mouth as she reached for her glass. They clinked together and Yoona grinned, trying to finish the food quicker.

Jessica’s face fell. “Yoongie, are you feeling ill?”

She shook her head, eyebrows furrowing.

“Because I think a certain nurse will be visiting you tonight. She didn’t go to med school, but her hands do wonders.”

It took a second of contemplation and a saucy wink for Yoona to absorb the meaning. The mental visual had her downing water before choking on the last bits. Even after half a year, she relentlessly catches me off guard. Sica in a sexy nurse outfit. My heart.

Jessica giggled under her breath, amused. “I think we’re in the roleplaying stage of the relationship. Is that okay with you?”

Yoona nodded, ignoring the spasms deep in her throat.

“Do I still have that effect on you?”

“Yes, Sica,” she managed to utter, sipping at her water to submerge final coughs.

The blonde scooted her seat around the restaurant table and comfortably laid a hand on her knee. “Enjoy your lunch?”

Conveniently, they had the upper level of the chic establishment to themselves. It could only fit a few two-seater tables, so they were relieved when no other couples disturbed their privacy.

Yoona brushed the tips of their noses affectionately. “Yeah. Good choice, Kitten.”

Jessica slid smooth fingertips along her jaw, guiding her to puckered lips. The brunette melted into the tender kisses, deeply breathing in the heavy perfume she’d become so dearly accustomed to over the months.

“Did you have enough?” she murmured, thumb drawing waves along Yoona’s thigh.

“I couldn’t eat another bite.”

“Are you sure?”

“Mmhmm. Why?”

Jessica pulled away as the server’s footsteps lightly tapped up the metal stairs.

“You requested the special?” he asked, aiming a slight smirk to the blonde. Yoona leered the wispy mustache upon his upper lip.

“Thank you. Just leave it here.”

The young man plucked the small rectangular box from his silver tray and placed it neatly on the table. Throwing Jessica another glance, he collected the used dishes and trotted back to the main level.

“I don’t like the smile he gave you,” Yoona mumbled, eyes cast down from the balcony, watching the skinny waiter attend another table.

“Yoongie, are you jealous?”

She shrugged, poking out her top lip. “I’m just saying he should lose that seedy 'stache. He gives off creep vibes.”

Jessica snickered into her lady’s soft cheek. “Uh huh. Well, look what I got you.”

Yoona’s studied the little package. A glossy pink box ornately tied with decorative brown ribbon. “What is it?”

“A chocolate croissant. For you.”

Kitten. I’m so full.”

“Croissants on special occasions is our new tradition. We can split it.”

Relenting, Yoona tugged at the ribbon, grumbling about “getting fat.” Jessica simply rested her chin onto her shoulder.

Inside the box was another box. A lighter shade of pink and wrapped similarly to the one containing it. Yoona’s fingers stilled. Jessica squeezed her knee. “Go on.”

Inexplicably, the woman’s stomach clenched. Something feels...different. “I don’t want to go on.”

“Keep going! I’m curious!”

She unraveled that string as well. And alas, it contained a final, squarish box. Yoona grazed a palm against her heated neck. “Th-that’s going to be a tiny croissant.”

“Open it, Yoongie.”

Resting her elbows on the table, she lifted the box and gave it a shake. This isn't any pastry I’ve ever felt. Jessica swatted her in the side.

Closing her eyes for a moment, she unwrapped that box, too. Despite all suspicions or tingling intuition, the appearance of the ring box took her breath away. She dropped it on the table. This time, her girlfriend didn’t speak.

A long pause.

Curiosity taking over, her jittery hands lifted the top, revealing a delicate ring placed snugly in the velvet center. White gold with a sizable marquise-cut diamond. Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit.

“Yoongie,” Jessica purred against her neck.

Her fingers twitched, wondering what to grasp.

“Yoongie,” she repeated, a smile in her voice. “breathe.

Air escaped through her nostrils as she deflated. Jessica’s hand left her leg to pick up the opened box. She pushed her seat back and waited. Waited until Yoona gained the nerve to make eye contact. The pounding in her ears made it very difficult to concentrate.

Im Yoona,” She held her gaze, captivated. “Will you marry me?”

Oh my... “Sica, you--”

“Marry me?” Jessica tilted her head with the most innocent, vulnerable face she’d witnessed since the night they became official at Hyoyeon’s party.

It’s happening. She’s proposing. How did I get completely blind-sided?

All unfortunate events of the past wiped out most of her wedding-themed thoughts. She couldn’t remember the last time she even toyed with the idea of walking down the aisle. Cast away with a hefty mountain of wedding magazines hogging space in the attic. Now, all the memories, desires, dreams of silk dresses and flowers rushed back and socked her square in the chest. It hurt. It healed. It scared the hell out of her.

So, what to say? What’s the only logical thing to say?

“Yes, Sica.”

Jessica face lit up. “You will?”

Yoona nodded profusely, face reddening. She kept reminding herself: Breathe. Breathe, Yoona.

Breathe as Jessica plucked the ring from the velvet holder.

Breathe as she delicately took her hand.

Breathe as it fit snugly, seamlessly on her finger.

It suits my hand perfectly.

Breathe as Jessica brought their faces together for a kiss.

Jessica Jung did it. She reduced a level-headed 24-year-old to a gasping, red-faced imbecile. Stressing over the most basic of automatic human operations.

Yoona broke the languid sweeps against her lips. “S-Sica?”

Jessica blinked open heavy-lidded eyes. “Hm?”

“You’re not cheating on me, right?”

Then, they burst into a bout of laughter. Teary-eyed, half-sobbing laughter. On Yoona’s part, at least.

God, no!” Jessica dabbed her face with a cloth napkin, eyes crinkled from her huge grin. “I love you, Yoongie.”

“I love you, too, Kitten.”

Jessica smirked, slipping their fingers together to scrutinize the gem up close. “I made a good choice, huh?”

“I made the better choice.”

The blonde’s kitty cat eyes lured her into a long, goofy staring contest. Yoona looked away first, feeling the skin on her face catching fire. Jessica does that. Expresses her feelings daringly with all the poise in the world. I’m so lucky. “S-so. How’d you find such a perfect size? I have a ton of ill-fitting rings in my jewelry box.”

Her girlfriend--no, fiancé--devoted a few more beats to the intense appraising. “Do you really want to know?”

“Oh no. Will I be creeped out?”

“Probably.”

“...was it Tiffany?”

“Bingo.”

“That girl snoops impressively. Not sure if that’s good or not...I miss her.”

“I miss her, too.”

“When’s she going to come vi..sit...” Yoona’s words trailed off when Jessica’s eyes wandered past her, to the level below. “Sica?”

“Oh, splendid. Look who’s here.”

Yoona spun in her seat right as Jessica hissed out a “Wait!”. She regretted the decision instantly. Yuri stood at the counter, coffee in hand and gaze directed at their little enclave upon the stairs. Damnit. We're spotted.

Shit, now she’s joining us,” the blonde narrated, watching Yuri wave and head to their side of the building. “Hurhur hi. I’m the Vagina Prince--coming to butt into your intimate moment.”

Yoona snorted, nudging her in the boob. “I can’t believe you called her that in public.”

“I was drunk.”

“Drunk and evil,” she teased, sneaking in a short peck before her ex approached.

“Fancy seeing you two in an area so...fancy,” Yuri greeted, setting her cup on their table.

The couple, fingers interlocked, made to stand up, but the tan woman halted them with a cursory wave. "Hugs not required. I’m healing.”

She looks healthy enough. “What happened?”

“Got a new tattoo down my back.” Yuri gestured from her shoulder to the edge of her hip. “It’s extremely intricate. Any contact would send me into a world of pain.”

Jessica and Yoona nodded, taking sips of their respective drinks. Please don’t go into detail about the tat. Please.

“So, this tattoo..”

Ugh.

“Most ambitious one yet. Full of allegorical imagery and all that. It reflects my past of cowardice and uncertainty. I call it: Cowardice and Uncertainty.”

“Must have taken you hours to come up with that one,” Jessica mumbled into her glass. Yoona covered her giggle with a palm.

Yuri ran hennaed hands through her hair, overtly unfazed. “Sarcasm is your prison, Jessica. Free yourself.”

“Sarcasm’s the sharpest weapon I own.”

“Believe me. I know. However, I’m wearing my insecurities openly. Where the world can observe my story.”

Yoona’s eyebrows rose. “That story being...?”

“It’s still a rough draft. Have patience.”

I can say one thing--you’re absolutely more confident. “Congrats on the design job, by the way. Sooyoung told me.”

Yuri broke out the familiar crooked smile. “Gah, thanks. The organization I’m working for sends organic food to countries all around the world to promote holistic goodness. Knowing my graphics will make these options more attractive is so...”

They sat in silence, focusing on Yuri doing some zippy karate chop-like movement with her hands.

“...ya know?”

The couple nodded again. That’s how their interactions worked with Yuri as of late. A ton of nods. A ton of sarcasm.

“Speaking of congratulations...” Jessica raised their connected fingers, letting the light glint against the diamond. Yoona’s chest warmed at the boastful sight.

“Ah, I didn’t miss the shine. As a matter of fact, I saw an interesting documentary on--”

“They’re not blood diamonds, couch crusader,” Jessica replied evenly, losing her smile.

Yuri shrugged. “Can’t be too sure, right?”

Another pause.

“I wish you two peace,” Yuri told them, taking a short bow. “Even if marriage was originally an oppressive social construct created by the patriarchy.”

Yoona threw an arm around her Jessica before she could go into a raging fit. “Thank you, Yuri! We got engaged literally ten minutes ago, so our patriarchy-promoting happiness is fresh.”

Yuri reclaimed her coffee. “Cool!”

“If you’ll excuse us,” She pulled at Jessica’s arm, urging her to stand up. “Sica and I have plans. It was nice seeing you.”

“Likewise.”

Yoona kissed Jessica on the back of her fuming honey blonde head. “Tell Boa we said hello.”

“We should do this again! Boa's eager to get one-on-one time with Jessica.”

“Fuck that nonsense,” Jessica stated pointedly while Yoona led her down the steps.

...

Jessica took out her anger on the poor seat belt, snapping it on with a sharp clack. “Holy shit. What a loon.”

“She’s figuring herself out. It takes time.”

A million awkward run-ins gave Yoona no chance to quietly contemplate a future friendship with her ex-girlfriend. Four years down the drain would put anyone into a bitter mood when pushed into the offender’s face by one friendly hangout (compliments of Hyoyeon and Sunny) or another. In the end, she appreciated it. A tolerance was built. The positive side of tolerance, even. Jessica, on the other hand...

“Bitch got her panties in such a twist that she started to lecture us on goddamn documentaries. On the happiest day of my life. I was so ready to cut her. I bet her tattoo’s as hideous as the dykey watch she was wearing.”

Yoona bit her lip, starting the car. “Is this really the happiest day of your life?”

“So far...”

She couldn’t help but stare at the shiny new addition as her long fingers gripped the steering wheel. The best kind of driving hazard. “I’m proud of Yuri. She has her own apartment and she’s apparently more decisive--choosing Boa and all.”

Jessica snorted, tickling Yoona’s shoulder. “You’re joking, right? Seohyun turned her down.”

A head shake. “No, I’m pretty sure she made the final decision.”

“Who told you that?”

“Taeyeon.”

“That’s your first mistake. Listening to Taeyeon.”

“Who told you about Seohyun?”

The blonde pursed her lips, fooling with the radio knob. “Tiffany.”

“So, Tiffany’s rumor mill trumps Taeyeon’s? Not very credible.”

“Trust me. Yuri got shot down.”

Yoona hit her turn signal gear and abruptly switched lanes. “There’s only one way to find out.”

“Oh my god, Yoongie. Are we paying them a visit?”

“Maybe.”

“You love to win.”

“Because I’m right!”

...

They playfully (and consistently) bickered until they reached Sunny’s floor, stumbling upon the haphazardly packed boxes and commonplace ruckus echoing from the room. The Yuri-Seohyun-Boa argument dissolved once they crossed the un-welcome mat.

“My girlies!” Sooyoung squawked, running over to envelop the two into her lengthy arms. “Are you here to help!?”

“Help what?” Jessica asked, tone suspicious.

Taeyeon twirled the tablet in her lap, grinning. “Heeeey, ladies. Made it just in time!”

“In time for wha--”

“Y’all lazy bitches suck! What is this shit!?” Hyoyeon bellowed, holding up two halves of a dish. “Can nobody pack anymore?!”

Sunny skipped over to join the group hug. “Taeyeon’s in charge of the dishes.”

Taeyeon--now sporting longer, much lighter hair--kicked a half-full cardboard box with the tip of her Converse. “Do I look like a dishware specialist to you?”

“Wrap this shit in newspaper or towels...or something.” Hyoyeon flung the broken glass at the recycling bin.

“You’re not paying me!”

“At this rate, Sunny won’t have anything left to move!”

Can't believe this slipped my mind! Hyoyeon took the big leap and invited Sunny to move in with her. “I’m so excited for you, Sunny!” Yoona held an arm out to ruffle her fluffy blue hair.

Sunny caught her wrist mid-swing. “Holy holy! Look at that rock!”

Sooyoung’s eyes popped from her skull. “Omigodomigodomigawwwwdddd!! Are you two...”

Yoona wiggled her ring finger. “Surprise!”

The next five minutes consisted of non-stop screaming.

Her best friend lifted her from the ground in a bear hug. “This calls for celebration!”

Sunny clapped in agreement. “Dinner after the move?”

“We’ve barely packed!” Hyoyeon groaned, opening cabinet after full cabinet. “Look at this biz!”

“Leave that crap for Seohyun and Taeyeon,” Sunny answered with a shrug.

A nice arrangement for those two. Rejected by family and using each other as support. Fortunately for Seohyun, she didn’t get cut off from her family. Living out of the house proved to be the least stressful option.

“Casa Seohyun y Taeyeon! This place is gonna be filled to the brim with ladies!” Hyoyeon high-fived her perv buddy.

“Excuse me?” Jessica cut in, eyeing them warily.

“Not my ladies,” Taeyeon clarified with and offended hand to her chest. “Seohyun’s.

“Ah, my protégé,” Hyoyeon sighed wistfully, tapping the glass on Snake Jessica’s upgraded tank.

Taeyeon propped her legs upon a stack of magazines. “Your protégé!? Are you high? She’s obviously taking after me.”

“You’re both delusional,” Sunny scoffed, taping up a container of Prismacolor markers. “Seohyun’s a young, free spirit with a healthy sex drive. Clearly like me!”

Jessica led Yoona to the comfiest chair, falling into her lap. These sort of who-is-Seohyun-emulating debates typically went on longer than necessary.

“Seohyun has subtlety, Hyo. Something you lack.”

“But she’s smart, like me.”

“Sunny--you callin’ us dumb!?”

“Hellz yes!”

Sooyoung stooped at their feet, manic smile plastered on her face. “You choose the place. I’ll treat you and Jess to dinner.”

“Aw, Sooyoung, that’d be--”

“No!” Hyoyeon interrupted while she noisily popped a roll of bubble wrap. “Invite Boa! That lady pays for everything. Remember last time?”

Dude,” Taeyeon threw her head back. “So much bubbly.”

Yoona knew that was coming. Anything to avoid dropping a cent. “Go ahead and invite her. Yuri, too. We spoke to her today.”

Sooyoung’s eyes dimmed. “Was...it okay?”

She patted her friend on the head, donning a toothy grin. “It was fine. Nothing can ruin my mood.”

Jessica twisted the ring around Yoona’s finger as she complained. “She’s so irritating, though. I never thought I’d say this, but I miss old dumbass Yuri. Now it’s Boa 2.0.”

“Dumbass edition,” Taeyeon added. Someone hasn’t fully gotten over the kiss with Tiffany.

“I disagree. She’s more self-reliant,” Yoona said with a shrug.

Hyoyeon dumped a drawer of silverware into a box. “Damnit, Yoona. Stop making me take your side!”

Never thought we’d be on amicale speaking terms. Miracles do happen. “Pretty soon, we’ll be the best of pals, Hyo!

“Bitch, don’t call me that. Doesn’t sound right out of your mouth.”

“See? We agree on that, too!”

“Damnit!”

Jessica flagged her best friend with her other hand. “Earth to Taeyeon.”

The woman, legs nervously bouncing, glanced up from the tablet screen. “Babe should be Skyping me any minute now. I have a surprise for her.”

“Show them!” Sunny yelled over Hyoyeon’s raucous battle with Styrofoam peanuts. “It’s a good one!”

Grinning ear-to-ear, Taeyeon whipped out a flat item from the couch cushion. “Ta-da! One ticket to Californiaaaa!”

Collective girly screeching returned.

“Taeyeon, that’s...that’s actually romantic.”

A dopey grin took up half her face. “I’ve been saving up for the trip since she left for the States three months ago. She’s gonna lose her shit.”

“Gay-cation!” Sooyoung cheered.

“More like, Lay-cation. If you know what I mean.”

“Leaving our dear Seohyun alone with all her women.” Hyoyeon snickered to herself.

“Poor Hyoyeon. Living precariously through younger, more available women,” Yoona mused aloud, garnering laughter from everyone but the blonde herself.

“Shut it. She’s my pimp apprentice. I marvel at her prowess.”

Sunny rolled her eyes. “Wasn’t your success rate roughly 20 percent?”

“That’s not bad!”

“As for me, I had no problem in this area.”

Sooyoung sighed, emptying the dusty top row of a bookshelf. “Ugh, here we go again.”

“Hell yes! She’s calling!” Taeyeon sparked to her feet, tapping the device immediately. “Baby, say hi!”

She flipped the tablet, showing off Tiffany and her gigantic white smile. “Almost everyone’s there! Omigosh. Hiiiiiiiiii!

Hiiiiiii!” they imitated, waving.

“Enough of these broads. Private time.” Taeyeon snatched the ticket and shut herself in the bathroom.

“That’s really sweet,” Yoona whispered into Jessica’s ear. “Flying across the world to see her girlfriend.”

“Sure, but my proposal was way sweeter.”

“The sweetest. I still can’t believe it.”

“Believe it, Yoongie.”

“So soon, too.”

“I’m not changing my mind a year from now, so why wait?”

Detecting her nosy bestie hovering, she threaded a few fingers into golden hair and led them into a rough kiss. She squinted an accusing eye until the Sooyoung turned away. “Guess I should go ring shopping for you next,” she hummed against strawberry lips.

“Mmm. I have so many ideas. I want the biggest, pinkest diamond ever.”

“You’ll wear whatever I buy you, Kitten.”

Not finding the comment funny, she parted their lips to pout.

Ahhhh, how did I resist her for so long? “Fine. Your gem will be so enormous that you’ll need a brace for your wrist.”

Exactly. Glad we see eye-to-eye.”

The sound of Hyoyeon obnoxiously knocking her forehead onto a wall blocked another make out session. “Fuck it! I give up. When Sooyoung's dude arrives with the van, I’ma throw unpacked shit in there and hope for the best.”

“Sounds good to me,” Sunny laughed, flopping onto the bed.

Minutes later, Seohyun came sailing into the studio, securely shutting the door behind her. “Goodafternoon, everyone,” she rushed out, striding across the floor.

She stopped short, acknowledging the guests. “Hey Jessica, Sooyoung...Yoona.”

Yoona gently straightened her throat. “Seohyun.”

Half a beat passed.

“Anyways, I’m kind of in a bind. If someone comes knocking for me, I’m not here.”

Hyoyeon twirled in place. “That’s my girl! What’s going on with you this time!?”

“Eager college freshies that--”

Several simultaneous knocks shut the room up.

“I’m not here,” Seohyun whined, holding a finger to her lips.

The bathroom door flew open. Taeyeon squeezed the tablet to her chest like an idol-obsessed preteen. “She’s making arrangements as we speak! I’m so--”

More knocking.

“Who the--”

Shhhhhhh!” Seohyun pushed Taeyeon back into the bathroom, clicking the door behind them.

Jessica sprang from Yoona’s lap, dragging her fiancé behind her. “We’ll get it. Move, Hyo!”

She whisked the front door open, revealing two young ladies, wide-eyed and starstruck at the group of beauties contained within one setting. They gaped for a few seconds prior to speaking.

“Is Seohyun in?” squeaked the first one, a tall chick with jet black hair and too many bracelets.

The shorter girl with glasses and red Oxfords pushed her out the way. “She needs to see me.”

“No, me!

“Is she in?!”

“Yes, yes! Is she available?”

Jessica and Yoona paused to glance at each other.

“Yep.” Yoona stepped aside. “She’s hiding in the bathroom.”

They scurried into the apartment, automatically filling it with high-pitched chaos and Hyoyeon having a very vocal fit of emotions.

Doubling over in laughter, Jessica dragged Yoona further into the hallway.

“Yoongie, did I mention that once you marry me, you’re kind of marrying my crazy friends?” Jessica blurted, catching her breath.

“Dear god, Juhyun! Open the damn door!” Sooyoung’s voice rung out.

Yoona giggled. “Same. I think Sooyoung won’t have any problem meeting her entertainment quotas from now on.”

A loud clamor of thumps erupted.

Awwwwww sheeet!” Hyoyeon screamed, starting a chant. “Yooouutube! Yooouuutube!”

Jessica quirked an eyebrow. “I kind of want to see what’s happening.”

“So do I.”

“My money’s on the Oxford girl.”

“Are you serious?” Yoona whacked her on the arm. “She has nothing on the tall one.”

They held their stance, silently swapping deranged, cheesy grins. Jessica lifted Yoona’s hand, giving her knuckles a peck. “Looks great, doesn’t it?”

Yoona didn’t bother looking at the ring. Her eyes remained fixed on Jessica. My Sica.

“Yeah, it does.”

“C’mon. Let’s go enjoy other people’s drama.”

End.
